Home Care Tips to Help Seniors Stay Hydrated

Nov 3, 2016 by Comfort Keepers of Pleasanton

If you are helping provide home care to a senior loved one, then you need to be ready and willing to take on a number of responsibilities. In addition to looking after these seniors and their daily needs, this type of care also involves making sure this senior is as healthy as possible while they receive care. There is a lot that goes into this, but one of the biggest concerns for many seniors has to do with their hydration. More seniors than ever actually suffer from dehydration and the effects can be devastating if not handled properly.

Dehydration can lead to headaches, muscle cramps, dizziness, nausea, hospitalizations and more. This is why it is such an important part of providing quality in home care. As we age, we actually start to lose the natural desire to drink water or feel thirsty. This is just one of the many reasons why it is so difficult for seniors to stay as hydrated as they need to. However, there are a few easy tips for any care provider to consider if they want to make sure that their loved one is staying as healthy and as hydrated as they can:

  • Make sure seniors avoid caffeine and alcohol as they can easily dehydrate a person
  • Keep track of their water consumption, striving for 8-10 glasses of water per day
  • Leave water out in an easy-to-reach place so it is simple for seniors to drink water on their own
  • Pay attention to the medications they take as they may dehydrate the body
  • Make sure on warm days that seniors are drinking even more water to combat the heat
  • Look for signs of dehydration in all seniors

Little tips like this can go a long way in helping any home care provider to make certain their senior loved one is staying healthy and hydrated each and every day.
