When a senior loved one is receiving some type of senior in home care because they can no longer care for themselves, it is typically up to their home care provider to make sure that they are able to get around safely on their own and still enjoy certain events in life. If you are planning on taking a loved one who is under senior in home care out to dinner, this can be a great way for them to get out of the house and have a little fun. However, there are a few things that senior in home care providers may need to do in order to make sure the entire process of eating out goes well for their senior. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Try to plan dinner early so you can go before the rush and don’t have to worry about over-crowding
  • Call ahead to make sure that the restaurant is handicap-accessible for seniors who may have a walker or wheelchair
  • If seniors have certain dietary restrictions, check on the menu first to make certain there will be something that they can eat
  • Make sure someone is there to help the senior cut their food or use the restroom if needed
  • Try to go to a well-lit restaurant that is easy to see in. This way seniors can feel more engaged with the other people at the table and they won’t be at risk for falling

Little steps like this can actually go a long way in helping any loved one receiving home care assistance who is planning on going out to eat. If you plan a dinner near their normal meal time, call ahead and take a few extra precautions during the meal, you and your senior loved one can have an enjoyable time going out to dinner together.
